Junior Achievement’s Rosé Soirée event raised $110k to support students

Read Time 3 Minutes

This month the 5th annual JA Circle of Wise Women Rosé Soirée raised $110,000 for Junior Achievement of South Florida (JA) programs.

With 225 women in attendance, the event was held at the former Neiman Marcus in The Galleria in Fort Lauderdale. The evening was an experience for all, beginning with a rose petal, red carpet entrance to shopping, networking, appetizers by Silver Lining and sips of rosé, provided by SipChanné, Bloomers Frozen Drinks and Breakthru Beverage Florida.

The evening continued with JA students sharing their inspirational journeys, awarding of the Lorraine I. Thomas Girls Scholarships and the pinning of 18 new Circle of Wise Women members. The event also honored the 2022 Woman of Wisdom (WOW), Sharon Gustafson-Florescue, Florescue Family Foundation who spoke about her personal and professional journey. Sharon is fabulous, generous, funny and beautiful inside and out.

The event’s title sponsor for yet another year was CITY Furniture who’s CEO, Andrew Koenig, is the current JA South Florida Chairman of the Board. “CITY Furniture is proud to be the title sponsor of the JA’s Rose Soirée, in the commitment to provide young women with the right education, skills, and opportunities to create vibrant and sustainable communities,” wrote Koenig in a recent social media post.

JA’s Circle of Wise Women is a vibrant group of women who are passionate about and dedicated to Junior Achievement’s mission of empowering youth with the knowledge, ability and confidence to navigate their futures, drive our economy, and lead our community.

They believe that Junior Achievement programs are a springboard to show today’s youth their potential for success. Since its inception, the group has raised more than $4.5 million for Junior Achievement of South Florida.

The group’s signature event is the annual JA World Uncorked – a culinary showcase where guests sample gourmet bites prepared by leading South Florida chefs and sip premier wines, spirits, craft beers and cocktails from local vendors. In addition, the Circle of Wise Women host social gatherings throughout the year and participate in JA-related events, such as the Rosé Soirée.

In addition to the hard-working JA team, special thanks goes out to the leading ‘Ladies In Pink’ event co-chairs, Yvette Birdsong, Melissa Milroy and Jennifer Starkey, Rosé sponsors, CWW members and guests for your generous contributions.

“As a mother and female leader, I feel a responsibility to motivate and inspire the next generation of girls. I am proud to lead an organization that shares this value,” said Laurie Sallarulo, CEO of JA South Florida. “While the Circle of Wise Women was formed to support students across all JA programs, I am thrilled the members have embraced the focus on girls. Thank you to all of the amazing women who have joined our dynamic group.”

Thanks to these women, JA will continue to provide tens of thousands of students with impactful programs preparing them for the future and support the goals and dreams of young female JA alumni!

Delray Beach-based Bidtellect announces new CTV/OTT advertising solutions

Read Time 3 Minutes

In the United States, there are more video-on-demand subscriptions than people, with 340 million subscribers for over-the-top (OTT) services according to Ampere Analysis data.

With 55 million cord-cutters in 2022, connected TV (CTV) and over-the-top (OTT) advertising are not just a ‘nice to have’ but an essential part of a media strategy.

Bidtellect, a leading demand-side platform and advertising technology company, announces the launch of a new CTV/OTT solution that connects brands with audiences where they are already consuming content and expands brands’ reach beyond linear TV.

OTT (over-the-top) is a means of providing television and film content over the internet at the request and to suit the requirements of the individual consumer. The term itself stands for “over-the-top”, which implies that a content provider is going over the top of existing internet services.

CTV advertising (Connected TV advertising) allows brands to reach their audience on smart TVs and OTT devices. Bidtellect now gives brands the power to target their audience with Connected TV ads during premium, ad-supported shows provided by top-tier networks.

Today, CTV/OTT advertising is an all but required component of a successful media strategy. With two-thirds of the US population projected to watch CTV content this year, eMarketer projects a 33.1% increase in CTV ad revenues for 2022. US ad spending per person will exceed $1,000 in 2022, rising more than 8% next year. The delivery of digital advertising across CTV/OTT channels is expected to be a market of over $18 billion in 2023.

Studies have proven most purchasing decisions are made at the household level, meaning the key to creating long-term customer connections is to deliver meaningful messaging to the members of the household. With Smart TV sales at record highs and linear TV audiences diminishing, CTV/OTT is the most engaging and cost-effective way to reach them.

Users will be able to leverage Bidtellect’s unique and unmatched performance bidding and optimization technology to seamlessly incorporate CTV/OTT into their media buying strategy.

Benefits of Bidtellect’s solution include:

  • Leveraging the company’s cost-efficient bidding capabilities, especially Automatic Algorithmic Rate Determination (AARDvark), which is now available in CTV/OTT.
  • Streamlining the planning, trading and execution with Bidtellect’s world-class support.
  • Powered by Context — leveraging Bidtellect’s industry-leading context-driven technology and metadata coverage across the entire supply ecosystem.
  • Access to the largest CTV/OTT enabled SSPs and premium publishers.

Clients will be able to activate CTV/OTT directly through Bidtellect’s DSP through all service models, with the ability to optimize and target premium content categories across multiple goals and bid types, plus utilize capabilities like budget fluidity, pacing, bid shading, creative flighting and more for maximum campaign ROI. CTV/OTT with Bidtellect will give brands and advertisers the chance to gain new audiences and re-engage with existing audiences in a new, strategic, complementary way.

“The way people access entertainment continues to evolve,” said Lon Otremba, CEO of Bidtellect. “In a sea of streaming choices, consumers want a knowledgeable voice to be a directional guide. Consumers are receptive – and expecting of – targeting and recommendations.”

One of the primary differences between OTT and CTV advertising is that OTT ads are typically served in the form of video ads within accessed video content. In contrast, CTV ads are usually served alongside apps that are installed on CTV devices or the device’s homepage itself. As a newer medium, advanced TV presents an evolving variety of monetization opportunities for advertisers willing to keep up.

“Our proprietary optimization algorithms are the smartest, most sophisticated in the industry and determine what creatives are driving results with audiences,” Otremba said. “Bidtellect utilizes a holistic approach to performance targeting that includes both contextual and audience models. Our range of proprietary contextual, targeting and optimization technology drives KPIs for more efficient delivery of ads.”

U.S. government program ACP helps many low income households pay for broadband

Read Time 2 Minutes

Broadband internet has rapidly become vital for accessing education, healthcare, remote work, and social services. Unfortunately, 18 million U.S. households do not have access to broadband – not due to a lack of available service, but simply because they cannot afford it.

The new Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is a monthly federal benefit that helps low income households pay for broadband service and internet-connected devices. The program stands to connect 47 million Americans to home internet, but as few as 23% of eligible individuals have enrolled due to awareness, trust, and enrollment barriers.

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) was created by Congress and implemented by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to assist eligible households to pay for internet services. The ACP will provide assistance to customers needing to connect to jobs, healthcare, and virtual classrooms.

The goal of this program is to ensure that internet service is affordable for everyone. However, you must use the service to keep the subsidy. If you reach 30 days without any internet usage, you may no longer be eligible to receive the subsidy.

The ACP is funded by Congress. In the event it is discontinued, the FCC will announce its end date. In that case, at the end of the program, you will be charged the undiscounted rate if you continue to receive the service, which will be subject to our general terms and conditions. You may transfer this ACP subsidy to another provider at any time.

Verizon recognizes the importance of internet connectivity and is pleased to make the ACP subsidy available to our eligible customers. Up to one $30/month subsidy for each eligible household or up to one $75/month subsidy for each eligible household on Tribal lands is offered.

Imagine not being able to connect to your classroom, job or healthcare? That’s why we’re participating in the Affordable Connectivity Program where qualifying households get up to $30/month off select home internet & mobile plans. Everyone deserves to stay connected.

SIM raises funds to support kids’ coding programs expansion across South Florida

Read Time 3 Minutes

SIM South Florida, local chapter of the national Society for Information Management, helped raise funds to help expand kids’ programming classes in South Florida.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the shortage of software developers and engineers in the United States will increase to 1.2 million by 2026. By 2030, software engineering jobs will be growing at 22% vs. 8% for all other jobs. The South Florida region, spanning from Miami-Dade to Palm Beach County, holds the highest number of technology workforce numbers in the state with Miami leading the pack a over 73,000 workers.

On Thursday, September 1st, SIM South Florida and SIM National came together during a “Back-To-School Bowling Tournament” at Bowlero in Davie, Florida to raise funds in support of both Code Palm Beach and SIM Foundation.

Code Palm Beach, an initiative of the Tech Hub Foundation, is on a mission to provide a launchpad to success in computer programming. The organization aims to increase the number of k-12 students in computer science programs and ultimately entering local bootcamps or high education institutions after graduation.

Code Palm Beach is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization introducing K-12 Students to computer coding technology through monthly classes. The nonprofit creates a positive environment that promotes tech, coding, engineering, and robotics education for school age children leveraging readily available curriculum from Code.org, freeCodeCamp and others.

With technology leaders from across the region in attendance, the SIM bowling tournament raised almost $5000 and SIM National has agreed to match an additional $1000! These funds will benefit both Code Palm Beach’s rebrand, to hire staff, and expansion into Broward and Miami-Dade counties, as well as SIM’s ELD program and leadership development initiatives.

“We are so greatly to the SIM organization for recognizing our efforts in the South Florida community and the importance of tackling the talent shortage and it’s lack of diversity head on with a long-term view in mind. It has to start with our youngsters and introducing them to STEAM-related activities early on to nurture a genuine interest that leads into middle school, high school and beyond. That’s how the talent pipeline is truly going to be built,” says Tech Hub CEO Nikki Cabus.

“The lack of technology talent is not a city or county issue, but a national issue faced by many tech focused regions across the country. With South Florida being one of the top tech hub’s in the country and the rapid growth we are seeing, it only makes sense to expand this program regionally,” she continued.

The event was financially supported by generous sponsors, TierPoint, Chelsea Technologies, and INSPYR Solutions (formerly TekPartners) to cover costs for venue, bowling, food and drink, and a fun 7 10 split contest.

“SIM South Florida is very excited with the results of our inaugural bowling tournament fundraiser. We set a goal to raise $5000 to support Code Palm Beach and our local leadership development initiatives and I am proud to say that we met that goal. We are grateful to our sponsors and all of the SIM members and supporters who donated and participated in the event,” said SIM South Florida Chair, Elizabeth Decker.

SIM South Florida will continue to promote donating to the SIM Foundation in support of Code Palm Beach. Any donations made to SIM Foundation from the South Florida chapter this year will go directly to Code Palm Beach. Those donations can be made at https://chapter.simnet.org/southflorida/donate-to-sim

Seedfunders 3rd deal in South Florida; leads CERA’s inaugural investment round of up to $500k

Read Time 3 Minutes

Davie-based public safety startup CERA is on a mission to arm first responders with the digital tools they need to efficiently and effectively respond to active threats.

Edward McGovern, a former Major in the Hallandale Beach Police Department, is acutely aware of this need. During his years in uniform, McGovern responded to some of the most tragic events in our region, including the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018 and the Fort Lauderdale Airport shooting in 2017.

McGovern has leveraged this experience to develop a unique suite of digital platforms that aim to eliminate the chaos and confusion during a critical event. The startup has already received some early traction, including its deployment in the Davie Police Department.

CERA has just announced that Seedfunders will lead its first major investment round. The tech-focused fund has pledged up to $500,000 for this round, dependent on how many additional partners join the deal.

Seedfunders invests in pre-revenue, scalable technology throughout Florida. Originally founded in St. Petersburg, it now has a presence in Orlando and Miami as well.

Angel investor David Chitester founded Seedfunders in 2017 and this year relocated to Miami to spearhead the fund’s efforts in South Florida. He told South Florida Tech Hub that this is the fund’s third deal in our region.

“The Miami market is underserved for what we do, and we’ve proven our business model,” Chitester explained. “Now we want to duplicate this success here.” Previously, Chitester also founded Florida Funders, which is now one of Florida’s most active venture capital firms.

According to Chitester, CERA’s timing is right. “When you look at what’s happening in the world, unfortunately, and see the need to help first responders to save lives. That’s the biggest reason we wanted to invest.”

Chitester also underscored the importance of McGovern’s leadership and the law enforcement experience he brings to the table.

“Investors always talk about, ‘Is it the horse or the jockey that you bet on?’ And really, it’s both. You can’t just bet on a person if the concept is not fundable and not scalable. And you can’t depend on a concept if you have a founder who can’t lead the company. So it’s both the horse and jockey – and in CERA’s case, we have both.”

McGovern is excited about jumping into this new chapter in CERA’s story. “This investment from Seedfunders represents the next phase of CERA’s growth and acceleration,” he commented.

“Our goals to expand sales and create new innovations will not just benefit from funding, but also with the experience and mentorship Seedfunders brings with it,” McGovern continued. “We are grateful to Dave Chitester and the Seedfunders team for believing in our mission and our business.”

“Together we will continue to drive development and leverage technology in this space to make our communities and citizens safer.”

Chitester hopes this funding will enable CERA to grow nationally. “We’d like to see them deploy their system to all the first responders in the country that need it.”

PBSC and 3 other South Florida universities receive $6.2M in cybersecurity funding with support from Tech Hub

Read Time 6 Minutes

Palm Beach State College was awarded more than $1 million by the state of Florida as part of a $15.6 million initiative to prepare students and mid-career professionals for jobs in the burgeoning fields of cybersecurity and information technology.

In total, four South Florida universities including Florida Atlantic University, Miami Dade College, Florida International University, and Palm Beach State College received $6.2M in state funding through the Cyber/IT Pathways Grant program.

Cybersecurity jobs are expected to grow by a faster-than-average 33 percent over the next 10 years, according to a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report cited by the governor’s office. In addition, cybersecurity-related job postings have increased by 43 percent in the past year, as reported by the CyberSeek website.

The Palm Beach Collaborative Cyber Pathway Project is one of 24 funded through a joint endeavor of the FLDOE and the Florida Center for Cybersecurity, housed at the University of South Florida. It was selected from 67 proposals vying for a piece of $15.6 million allocated by the Florida Legislature this year to prepare more students to pursue careers in cybersecurity and address state and national workforce needs.

With dozens in attendance, college and school district officials formally announced the Palm Beach Collaborative Cyber Pathway Project at a kickoff event in the Center for Bachelor’s Programs on the Lake Worth campus Aug. 25.

The celebration included remarks from Don Gladney, Interim Dean of Bachelor’s Degree Programs, Dr, Ava Parker, President of Palm Beach State College, Mike Burke, Superintendent for The School District of Palm Beach County, Deana Pizzo, CEO at I.T. Solutions South Florida, Henry Mack, Senior Chancellor at Florida Department of Education, Julia Dattolo, CEO of CareerSource Palm Beach County, and Nikki Cabus, CEO at South Florida Tech Hub.

“We owe an immense amount of gratitude to the governor and the Legislature for appropriating these funds,” said Henry Mack, Ed.D., senior chancellor for the Florida Department of Education where he oversees the Divisions of Career and Adult Education, Florida Colleges, Blind Services, Vocational Rehabilitation, and the Commission for Independent Education.

“The most exciting thing is the alignment of the curriculums across the sectors to ensure seamless transfer and provide an accelerated pathway into the workforce for the students in Palm Beach County.”

During the one-year project, the school district’s curriculum for cybersecurity and information technology will be aligned with that of Palm Beach State College’s to provide students with the appropriate training programs, certifications, degree programs, and education pathways to acquire cybersecurity skills to work at all levels from entry-level technical positions to high level security leadership and management positions.

The project will enhance technology in some high schools and provide professional development and resources for K-12 teachers and PBSC professors.

The projects four objectives are:

  1. Increase the number of students enrolled in SDPBC and PBSC Cyber/IT Pathway programs by 5% in August 2023 compared to August 2022;
  2. Increase the number of industry certifications and degrees earned by SDPBC and PBSC students programs by 5% in August 2023 compared to 2022;
  3. Create articulated curriculum that aligns instruction at SDPBC with course objectives at PBSC programs by August 2023; and
  4. Increase student job readiness through participation in experimental learning programs by 95% or targeted students by August 2023.

Mike Burke, superintendent of Palm Beach County schools, spoke about his excitement for the grant because it will help students stay up to date on cybersecurity/IT issues and solutions. Before becoming superintendent, he was responsible for the district’s information technology division as its CFO.

“As the former CFO, I recognize the value and importance of cybersecurity/IT,” said Burke. “We are heavily dependent on all of our IT systems. We really can’t operate our schools without them. In cybersecurity, the work is never done. You have to continually invest and reinvest to make sure you’ve got the right staff and the right hardware and software, and I appreciate the state making this type of investment.”

Palm Beach County remains a major cybersecurity IT center and a cluster of more than 600 technology and support businesses employing more than 15,000 workers. Employment outlook data from EMSI indicates that Palm Beach County will have over 2,500 job openings over the next three years in IT fields with wages averaging $52.80 per hour, or over $100k in a full-time salary role. In Florida, a 12.9% increase is expected as almost one-fifth of the workforce are at or near retirement age.

As the president and CEO of CareerSource, Julia Dattalo knows the dire need to get workers into the pipeline for these critical fields. “When we get a job order at CareerSource now even in the agriculture industry every job order asks for knowledge in computer software,” Dattalo said.

“There are so many apps out there. We are shopping on apps, we are working on apps. We’ve gone from an eight-hour day in the workplace to a remote workforce and that means technology has to follow us. With that technology comes problems like malware and cybersecurity attacks. We have to protect our information, and we need people to help us do that.”

Deana Pizzo, PBSC alumna, CEO of I.T. Solutions, Board Member for South Florida Tech Hub, and member of the PBSC Bachelor of Applied Science Degree Programs Advisory Board, brought two of her interns, Collin Passmore and Gavin Pizzo, to the celebration. The project will help her hire more interns like Passmore, a junior network engineer at I.T. Solutions for the past two and a half year, and get them into the workforce.

“I could not be prouder to be the voice and represent our local business community and work with the College to figure out what we need,” she said. “It’s a fast-growing community, and I’m happy to be here representing that.”

Passmore, who graduated from PBSC with an Associate in Arts degree this year, took speech and computer technology classes at PBSC and says what he is learning in the classroom helps on the job.

“Those classes were great because the things I was learning such as how to install desktop software and how to better speak to clients, I was able to directly apply to my job at I.T. Solutions.”

Nikki Cabus, PBSC alumna and CEO of South Florida Tech Hub, a nonprofit organization that provides resources for tech development, lauded the partnership. South Florida Tech Hub supported the grant application. One component of the grant was regional coordination between higher education and the school districts which Tech Hub highly supports.

“Every single company that comes to us is asking for talent and how they can educate that talent and find their students opportunities for internships and apprenticeship programs, which is why it is so important for us to support this grant that will help us provide them that,” said Cabus.

“The only way we are going to truly move the needle in regards to tech talent is through collaboration. This is not a city or county issue, but an issue for the entire state,” stated Tech Hub CEO, Nikki Cabus.

The SDPBC’s six Cybersecurity Academies are located at Palm Beach Central High School, Wellington High School, West Boca Raton High School, Santaluces High School, John I. Leanard High School, and Jupiter High School, and they are housed in seven under-resourced classrooms with outdated computers. The focus will be on these schools, as well as students and instructors at other schools in the county.

World’s first AR techno sport HADO celebrates agreement with Japan’s meleap

Read Time 4 Minutes

HADO USA Technology Sports Inc. is celebrating an exclusive agreement with Meleap Inc. that will accelerate the future of sports in the USA.

HADO is the first-ever physical esport in the world using Augmented Reality (AR) technology. Unlike Virtual Reality (VR), HADO players aren’t restricted by the cumbersome cables, controllers, and screens required to navigate virtual environments. The more well-known Virtual Reality (VR) takes you into the digital world while Augmented Reality (AR) brings digital elements into your world. HADO players run freely within real-world arena battles, wearing wireless head mounted displays and wrist motion sensors, using only gestures to unleash super powered projectiles on opponents.

Meleap Inc. CEO, Hiroshi Fukuda and the founder of the leading-edge AR technology sport HADO, dreamed of throwing “hadoken” or a special attack fireball, like in the comics, on TV, and in the popular arcade game Street Fighter. This passion burned inside until HADO was realized as a sport in 2014. Today, players can strap on head-mounted displays and armband sensors to wield energy balls and shields on a real-world court as if by magic.

Fukuda proudly held an offline ceremony celebrating the partnership agreement with HADO USA Technology Sports Inc. and its founder and CEO, Shane Vander Kooi.

“It was such an honor to be hosted at the brand new Meleap world headquarters and flagship HADO Arena in Tokyo. To finally meet the creator and visionary behind the worlds first AR physical techno sport, CEO Hiroshi Fukuda, along with the Board of Directors was an event I’ve really been looking forward to,” posted Vander Koi in a recent social media post.

“I especially appreciated the warm hospitality of CBO, Kent Lim, and Sales Director Jocelyn Bouchet. We have lots of exciting HADO news to share with America so stay tuned!”

The two companies started the negotiation online two years ago during the pandemic to search for the best opportunities to work together to lay the foundation for HADO in the US market, concluding an agreement in November 2021.

“We feel very honored that the team at meleap has placed their trust in us with this exclusive partnership,” shared Vander Kooi, HADO USA CEO. “HADO is ideally positioned to capitalize on the extraordinary growth trends fueled by GenZ engagement in esports, gaming, sport and immersive entertainment as well as the convergence of the new economies embodied by the metaverse, blockchain and creator communities,” Vander Kooi continued.

HADO has already been experienced by over 2.5M people and rapidly expanded to dozens of countries through a global community of arenas and teams.  Sports, fitness, entertainment and community are the four main elements of HADO.  Crossing the boundaries between sports and gaming in the 5G era, HADO is positioned to bring the metaverse into the real world.

“What was especially worth noting about this competition is that meleap has taken the innovative step by making fans a part of the game via their proprietary Wow Live app.  This entertainment platform app is used to not only view a live-stream of these celebrity HADO matchups, but is used as a tipping platform empowering fans with the ability to  sway the game in favor of their favorite players and teams,” Vander Kooi told South Florida Tech Hub. “HADO is already the world’s first physical augmented reality sport and is pioneering a transformation of both sports and the spectator experience,” he continued.

The AR techno sport is played 3-on-3 within a real-life court or arena with individual fast-paced, highly physical games lasting 80 seconds each. (See video below.) “HADO allows players to literally, Get in the Game! We look forward to expanding the HADO community throughout the US and joining the international HADO community”, said Vander Koi.

Based on this exclusive partnership, both companies are eager to put more resources in one of the biggest markets in the world to establish a strong footing for the location-based-entertainment (LBE) business, as well as to explore the potential online entertainment business opportunities.

“In the immediate future we look forward to announcing a number of exciting new HADO activations, including one opening in Las Vegas next month.  We are also in discussions with multiple collegiate and scholastic partners and hope to begin piloting league play shortly,” Vander Kooi told South Florida Tech Hub. “As a start-up here in the US, we are raising capital to support our aggressive expansion plans and welcome interest from potential strategic and investment partners.  We’re looking forward to developing and supporting a HADO community across the country and furthering our partnership with meleap in Japan!”

The perfect integration of AR technologies and physical sport continues to evolve, bringing a whole new level of excitement to all demographics in the market! Now is the time to join HADO USA and Get in the Game by visiting hado-usa.com .

Startups presenting at the Pitch and Pour event represented a cross-section of South Florida’s innovation economy – from media to upskilling, and everything in between.

Modern Trials – Leveraging electronic medical record data from a broad network of healthcare organizations to match patients in need of advanced treatment options with appropriate clinical trial opportunities.

Parkquility – Taking the headache out of parking by enabling consumers to reserve parking spots in advance.

Brain A.C.T.I.V.E. – Empowering businesses to improve their employees’ mental fitness.

A resounding success, and more to come

Mike Maniscalco, EVP of Technology at Applied Blockchain and Chair of Tech Hub’s Startup Founders Peer Group, underscored the importance of events like the Pitch and Pour for South Florida’s rapidly-expanding tech ecosystem.

“It was an incredibly successful first event,” Maniscalco told South Florida Tech Hub. “We need to do more. It was clear from the amount of attendees that the appetite is huge. We should keep having more of these events, as people continue to be willing to come.”

This event is what the Startup Founders Peer Group is all about: bringing founders and entrepreneurs together to connect, share, and learn from each other in a safe setting. They typically meet once a month to share our successes, needs and resources. Through the work of the Startup Committee, participants attend events such as pitch clinics, contests, and investor connection events. They also hear from guest speakers and take part in summits and expos.

Serial entrepreneur and RaiseLink chief executive Chris Houghtaling was one of the experts hearing pitches at the event. Houghtaling said that he had been to similar events in other tech ecosystems internationally, but nothing quite like it in South Florida.

“Not only did it help startups improve their pitches, but it also allowed for ample networking in a relaxed and fun atmosphere,” commented Houghtaling.

Business: Providing colocation, cloud, and network connectivity services to leading businesses in South Florida and beyond

Founded: 2017

HQ: Norwalk, CT

Employees: 140

Website: 365DataCenters.com

The global data center colocation market size reached $46 billion in 2020, and is expected to grow to over $200 billion by 2030. Demand for cloud services is even greater: $300 billion in 2021 – ballooning to $1.6 trillion by 2030.

For more than a decade, 365 Data Centers has been arming businesses with the colocation, cloud, and network services that they need to keep their IT house in order. The company operates 12 colocation facilities in the U.S., with downtown locations that offer connectivity to major fiber routes. 365 has clients from a diverse range of industries including professional services, insurance, and medical.

In 2017, 365 Data Centers acquired Host.net, which gave the Connecticut-based company firm footing in the South Florida market. This acquisition landed the company two data centers in our region: one in Boca Raton and another in Fort Lauderdale. A significant portion of 365’s nationwide fiber network, including 350 fiber miles that connect the regional data centers to the NAP of the Americas in Miami, is also located in Southeast Florida – and has been substantially upgraded since 365 entered the market.

Ray Allieri is the Regional Vice President of 365 Data Centers, overseeing all operations in Southeast Florida, which is now one of the company’s largest markets. The New England native has been with 365 Data Centers since January. He told South Florida Tech Hub that 365 Data Centers’ focus on customer service makes the company stand apart from its competitors.

“We’re a single source for integrated network, colocation, and cloud service – one team, one contract,” said Allieri. “That is important for small customers and large customers, because it gives them one source to go to for everything that they need.”

Another unique aspect of 365 Data Centers is that it can serve very small customers, including those only needing as little as a quarter cabinet of space. “Many competitors will not look at anything less than a half a cabinet or even a full cabinet,” said Allieri. “Then we combine that with network capability that allows the customers to connect to their equipment here in our data center.”

365 Data Centers has close relationships with major cloud providers – some of whom even have their equipment in 365’s colocation facilities. “Data centers are the backbone of the cloud,” said Allieri. “Whether it’s your data center or somebody else’s, connecting everybody and being able to get to your customers quickly is very important.”

The advantage to using 365 Data Centers’ private cloud over public cloud alternatives is that customers can know exactly where their virtual machine is located. Allieri also noted that the cost structure of public cloud services can be opaque; whereas with 365’s solution, it’s clear from the get-go and often more cost effective.

Allieri is not new to South Florida – he was here previously for four years, but left in 2020. Comparing 2022 to 2020, he said that “the market has expanded dramatically.”

“That’s exciting for us because we’ve increased investment into our facilities,” Allieri continued. “And we have lots of room to be able to grow and support the market as it grows around us.”

He also underscored the growth of managed service providers – third-party companies that maintain IT infrastructure – as an exciting opportunity for 365. “I think we can be a very good partner to them as well.”

Engineer the Change scholarship expands access to South Florida tech jobs while expanding our regional talent pool

Read Time 3 Minutes

A lack of top tech talent is one of the major barriers to the growth of South Florida’s innovation ecosystem. Our research suggests that Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade have 6.5 times the number of new software engineering positions available this year than there are engineers to fill them. This is significantly higher than global figures, which sit at around 2x.

Boca Code is working to fill this talent gap by equipping ambitious South Floridians with the skills they need to excel in a software engineering role.

To support Boca Code’s mission, Boca-based tech media conglomerate Techstrong Group has announced that it will take part in the Fall 2022 Engineer the Change scholarship. Two students will receive $10,000 each to put towards Boca Code’s Software Engineering Course, a 10-week, full-time bootcamp. By the end of the program, students will be prepared for a career in software engineering.

For Techstrong Group, these scholarships combine two goals. One: help make South Florida a world-class tech hub. Two: provide opportunities for people from underrepresented communities to gain the skills they need to find success in the tech industry.

“We are pleased to partner with Boca Code to give talented individuals a chance to pursue their dreams and launch, or advance, their career in IT,” commented Alan Shimel, founder and CEO at Techstrong Group. “The scholarship will be awarded to the most deserving student who is passionate about technology and demonstrates the potential to be a future leader.”

“We appreciate our partnership with Techstrong Group,” said Boca Code CEO Todd Albert. “It is important to us that we seize every opportunity to help foster diversity and inclusivity within the tech industry.”

“The Engineer the Change scholarship is a great start to empowering disadvantaged minorities within the South Florida community to grow their technical skill set,” Albert continued.

This scholarship has already led to some major success stories. For instance, last year’s scholarship went to Alina Maliuk, a first-generation immigrant from Ukraine. Maliuk now works as a software engineer at West Palm Beach-based fintech SMArtX Advisory Solutions.

“Boca Code’s workshop in web development was energizing and furthered the learning I had already  started on my own. Through that initial course, the Boca Code team inspired me to go even further. I  am ready to move onto my next chapter and I would like that to be a career in software engineering,” said Maliuk.

“Thanks to the Engineer the Change scholarship, I now have this amazing opportunity to accelerate my tech career,” Maliuk continued. “I will give back by showing other female immigrants of the Russian speaking community in Florida that if you can dream it and work hard to achieve it, you can make it happen.”

Albert told South Florida Tech Hub that Boca Code has seen rapid growth since being founded in 2020. “Every cohort this year has been full,” he said. They are also looking to add some new classes to create even more opportunities for students.

Read Time 3 Minutes

Just this month, Brazilian software and data platform, Semantix (SITX), has merged with Alpha Capital (ASPC), a special purpose acquisition company, or ‘SPAC’ focused on technology in Latin America. It is the first technology SPAC from Brazil listed in the United States and they just opened an office in South Florida – Coral Gables to be specific.

The end-to-end artificial intelligence company debuted on Nasdaq valued at approximately $1 billion. Semantix is Latin America’s first fully integrated data software platform. The common stock and warrants began trading under the tickers STIX and STIXW, priced at $10.

Layoffs? Why NOW is the time to hire.

Read Time 2 Minutes

Companies across the country continue to struggle with the continued impacts of COVID-19 and a looming recession. Recent South Florida headlines include significant layoffs from employers such as REEF, Convey Health, Papa, and more. Despite layoffs and hiring freezes, company leaders still need to have great teams to support their growth.

The wave of recent layoffs however, has provided a unique opportunity for companies that are well positioned for growth: the market is flooded with great talent. Now is the time to hire.

Historically, some industries still do fairly well during recessions, or even thrive. These are often industries where demand is insensitive to changes in prices and incomes and the volume of consumer demand is stable or even elevated. Technology is one of them and a part of almost every industry sector imaginable.

Some are holding on to their talent, while others turn to improved wages and more flexibility to counter the voluntary quits. With the complexity of hiring in the current economy, hiring managers should also implement sustainable hiring practices – especially in the tech industry – where companies are constantly competing for developers, designers and other digital professionals.

Despite the news, the hiring boom is still on.

Sustainable recruiting strategies are the best way for companies to attract and retain top talent. As organizations grow, the need for a sustainable workforce continues to grow with them. To find the right talent, companies must first know what they’re looking for, priorities, and long-term goals.

With the complexity of hiring, businesses should be aware of a few key trends in sustainable hiring. The current candidate market sees a subtle misunderstanding between the employer and the job seeker. Many job seekers, especially in the tech industry, are becoming picky about choosing their employer. This is mainly reflected in the high layoff rates in the past months.
