Business: Software development consulting company working on AI, machine learning, and blockchain technologies

Founded: 2008

HQ: Delray Beach, FL

Employees: 10

Website: GoOrion.com

For Marc Asselin’s whole life, he wanted to be an architect. He even went to school to study architecture. But in the 80s, he stumbled upon computer programming.

And in Asselin’s words, “I never looked back.” Since then, Asselin has been enjoying being a software developer.

In 2008, Asselin launched Orion Innovation, a consulting firm focused on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain technology.

And Asselin started working on the blockchain way before it was in vogue, telling South Florida Tech Hub that at first he began by building blockchain-powered tools for clients in the oil and gas and real estate investment industries.

“We’ve always tried to apply blockchain technology to real use cases,” he said, citing the example of creating blockchain-based digital versions of paper contracts.

“Web3 is interesting, but it’s going to take a while to get there,” he said of the burgeoning movement that seeks to create a more decentralized version of the internet. “There are a lot of players pushing it forward. But where it will get really interesting is when there are more business use cases – not just consumers.”

Orion typically works with B2B clients, but recently it has begun working with the public sector – specifically the Department of Defense. Asselin is excited about the prospect of helping the government leverage innovations in AI, ML, blockchain, and more.

One interesting example: creating so-called no-knowledge proofs. Take for example getting a drink at a bar. Currently, you have to show staff your ID that contains significantly more information than just your age: your home address, your full name, et cetera. With a no-knowledge proof, staff could simply be given a yes or no to the question, “Is this person of legal drinking age?” No more info required.

Orion has also begun to develop a spin-off product called Ava. “Ultimately, Ava came out of a lot of clients asking us for help organizing and cleaning their data,” said Asselin, noting that before data can be leveraged in tools like AI, it first needs to be labeled and easily accessible.

In November, the team launched Ava in demo form, with a view towards rolling out a minimum viable product in June 2023. The ultimate goal: saving time and effort.

Ava has a few tricks up its sleeve though. For one, the output of the data can be viewed in three dimensions, using a VR/AR device such as the Magic Leap 2.

“You can walk into your data,” asserted Asselin, drawing parallels to Jarvis from Iron Man. Conversational AI will enable users to ask Ava’s platform questions, and have it respond. “There are an endless number of use cases,” he said, noting particular usefulness in the area of cybersecurity.

“At the end of the day, this product is designed to do the work of a significant number of data scientists,” he said.

2022 | A Year In Review

Read Time 19 Minutes

After almost two years of a worldwide pandemic, 2022 was a year of renewed energy for the South Florida tech ecosystem. As one of the first organizations in South Florida who began building our tech hub back in 1995, it has been refreshing seeing the community begin to come together for one purpose over the last couple years. New to South Florida tech? Check out last year’s 2021 recap.

As people began to get back out and about, the Tech Hub mission statement of “Building South Florida’s Tech Hub” was seen and felt stronger than ever. As Tech Hub Chair Michael Fowler said just prior to starting out the 2022 year, “There’s one unified voice in South Florida that’s ready to be a unified region.” From Miami, Broward, Palm Beach and now Martin County, 2022 was a year of great highs and lows in the tech industry, but showed our tenacity as a community.

Real change takes a lot of committed people and organizations – these are just a few of those people and their stories Tech Hub highlighted throughout the year.

JANUARY

We started off the year with our annual Tech Hub TEE OFF 2022, at the hi-tech Top Golf Miami Gardens, sponsored by Crown Castle Fiber.

This SOLD OUT event had 150 people in attendance from all across the region enjoying great food and drinks, a fun game of golf and helping raise $1000 for our kids coding program, Code Palm Beach.

Thank you to all our sponsors and community partner, The Lab Miami, for coming out and learning more about Tech Hub, how your membership dollars are being used, what you can do to get involved, and, of course, meet some of the best people around!

FEBRUARY

From the #BocaTechHappyHour (Boca Raton) to the GrowFL Awards (Orlando) to Synapse Summit (Tampa), February featured all sorts of events that feature the growth in the state.

We were proud to represent tech in South Florida at Synapse Summit in Tampa. South Florida Tech Hub CEO, Nikki Cabus, had the opportunity to discuss “Florida’s Innovation & Opportunity” with panelists Melissa Medina, President of eMerge Americas, David Adelson, Executive Director of IT at Orlando Economic Partnership, and CEO and Co-Founder of Synapse, Brian Kornfeld.

There were also tons of Tech hub members and partners represented during the event!

MARCH

Tech Hub started the month off by attending the CIO Council of South Florida’s State of the CIO where CIOs from across the region come together to discuss trends in the market.

We also collaborated with The Center for Black Innovation and Broward College’s BCEx program supporting underrepresented entrepreneurs in South Florida for our first-ever Black Founders Brunch with a full 3-course meal free and a chance to hear from special guest speakers including entrepreneur, data scientist, and technologist, Ernesto Lee.

We also had our #JupiterTech Happy Hour, Web3 Tech Talk, and Women’s International Day Breakfast, both sponsored by TriNet. The women’s breakfast brought together 50 women who discussed everything from love, loss, sex, happiness, passion, career, and support for one another.

APRIL

What a month!! MiamiTech Month soon became known as #SoFloTechMonth. Although the “Miami Metro Region” includes both Broward and Palm Beach, many people across the country are still unaware. The more we educate  we will begin to successfully use the power of each county to support the growth of the entire South Florida tech ecosystem.

Tech Hub created a campaign and webpage to highlight ALL the tech, innovation, and startup activity across the region. SoFloTechMonth.org featured community meetups, pitch events, networking events, and tech conferences from Tech Hub’s #MiamiTech Happy Hour Tech Hub & FAU Tech Runway Pitch Clinic to the eMerge Americas to SoFlo DevCon 2022 and our Think Tank Thursday at The Lab Miami and so many more!

Tech Hub acquired Code Camp in 2022 and rebranded it to SoFlo DevCon. Held at NSU Davie and sponsored by Schonfeld Strategic Advisors, the event had almost 800 in attendance and entrance was FREE to all attendees. This year’s 17th annual SoFlo DevCon attracted developers, engineers, designers, project managers and over 100 speakers. Tracks included everything from AI to blockchain to cloud and even entrepreneurship – learn, connect and grow!

MAY

You’d think that after a crazy jam packed month like April that we’d slow down a bit in May..

Nope.

From Brightline Train’s anniversary to Tech Hub’s annual Cinco de Mayo Golf Tournament, our first in-person Mayor’s Roundtable discussion, supporting FAU’s annual Data Science & AI Conference, we once again had a month full of activity and news.

Sponsored by TechStrong, our golf tournament 140 golfers enjoyed an afternoon of golf, lunch, raffles, contests and help raise over $1000 for our k-12 Code Palm Beach program.

JUNE

From the international Ingram Micro Cloud Summit in Miami, 22nd ITEXPO and IDEA Showcase in Ft. Lauderdale, EmpowerHER Networking Event at NSU Davie, FAU & Fenway Group Mentorship Program in Boca Raton, Cuddle Party with Puppies, sponored by BlueAlly Technology Solutions, in Ft. Lauderdale and back to West Palm Beach for our #WestPalm Happy Hour, sponsored by TriNet, we were ALL OVER South Florida this month!

Tech Hub has been collaborating with the ITEXPO for the past three years in an effort to highlight more South Florida tech companies and startups. We support through obtaining speakers, sponsors/exhibitors, promotion, coordination of panels, and help organize the IDEA Showcase startup pitch competition.  Last year’s first place winner was Modern Trials!

JULY

July marks exactly one year since Tech Hub and TechLauderdale began discussions to unify and become one stronger organization so we decided to celebrate our “First Birthday Party” sponsored by Focus GTS and Signature Consultants.

We were so blessed to have over 200 of the best people in our tech hub community attend. From educational intuition leaders to startup founders, CIOs, bootcamp students and tech professionals, we were so happy to have you all there to celebrate with us!

With SFTA/TechLauderdale being one of South Florida longest standing tech associations and Tech Hub being the fastest growing, the merger only made that much sense in bringing the region together even and making a statement that collaboration is key. Check out the highlight video here by Focus GTS!

AUGUST

With so many local stories and events this month, Tech Hub stepped up our coverage. It’s crazy to think the below is only a snapshot of all the activity and news stories from the month!

We started out the month with a sold out Founder & Tech Leaders Happy Hour, sponsored by c3 Complete, PeakActivity, and Think Systems, that brought our about 50 tech leaders from across South Florida. The event was held at the brand new beautiful Easton Rooftop Pool & Lounge in Ft. Lauderdale. We then held the

Our Pitch & Pour held in the beautiful Merrick Manor in Coral Gables was another sold out event and certainly the highlight of the month for many. The event brought together startup founders in a non-stressful environment to pitch their ideas to local investors – no stage, no microphones, no prize pot, no winner. Just founders ready to pitch and funders ready to listen.

The Crypto Connect & NFT Expo was held at the Palm Beach County Convention Center making it one of the largest South Florida crypto events and the first of its kind in Palm Beach County.

Our Tech Talent Fest held at Signature Grand in Davie was sponsored by Semantix North America and brought hiring companies and partners together from across South Florida. Featured hiring companies such as ModMed and Signature Consultants spoke to the job seekers about their companies and the importance of networking and building relationships.

We closed out the busy month at Palm Beach State College’s Lake Worth Campus celebrating the awarded over $1 million by the state of Florida as part of a $15.6 million initiative to prepare students and mid-career professionals for jobs in the burgeoning fields of cybersecurity and information technology. Tech Hub CEO Nikki Cabus was invited to speak among the distinguished speakers Tech Hub’s support of the grant and overall tech community.

SEPTEMBER

SIM South Florida and SIM National came together during a “Back-To-School Bowling Tournament” at Bowlero in Davie, Florida to raise funds in support of both Code Palm Beach and SIM Foundation. The SIM bowling tournament raised almost $5000 and SIM National has agreed to match an additional $1000! These funds will benefit both Code Palm Beach’s rebrand, to hire staff, and expansion into Broward and Miami-Dade counties, as well as SIM’s ELD program and leadership development initiatives.

Launched this month, the South Florida Talent Report is a resource for our tech industry stakeholders and partners as a guide for our decisions, our companies, education institutions, and economic development partners are similar in this thinking. Our Talent Committee has led with a small team to identify and respond to the needs of our quickly progressing industry.

We held our #MiamiTech Happy Hour this month in which TriNet sponsored the first 50 guests’ drink tickets and our Ladies Lunch in collaboration with SIM South Florida’s SIM Women. They were both a great way to unwind, connect and bring together folks in a laid back and fun environment.

OCTOBER

Tech Hub started the month off strong with our annual Tech Hub Hackathon. This year’s event was held in collaboration with FAU’s College of Engineering and presented by Office Depot, FPL and Varis among other community sponsors. This year’s theme “Hack My City” around the idea of civic hacking. Our “city partner” was the City of Hollywood with Mayor Josh Levy involved and the City’s IT Director, Raheem Seecharan, a part of the judges panel.

We also held our first-ever CxO Networking Dinner at the oh-so-cool BrandStar Studios in Deerfield Beach. The presenting sponsor was TriNet and supported by TechStrong Group, Semantix, Signature Consultants, and SIM South Florida.

Opening remarks were given by BrandStar Founder, Mark Alfieri and TriNet representative Maria Vargas, keynote by C3 Complete Founder, Rick Mancinelli, and the night’s open roundtable discussion moderated by Tech Hub’s CxO Peer Group Chair and Founder of PeakActivity, Manish Hirapara. Guests discussed the future of work, efficiency versus resiliency, maintaining an authentic purpose and culture and more!

NOVEMBER

Global Entrepreneurship Week is the big focus this month with activities all around the world supporting and highlighting entrepreneurship. Tech Hub and Synapse were named statewide organizers for Florida with Tech Hub hosting the state’s inaugural Ignite Florida Startup Summit.

Re-Discovering Innovation at TECHPalooza 2022!

Read Time 7 Minutes

Where do we start?

You may think that not having a main highlight at this year’s event would be a bad thing. In fact, it’s just the opposite. There were so many exciting things happening this year, we don’t know which was better. I guess it depends on who you ask.

From flying cars, augmented reality dodgeball, robot dogs, 3D printers, speaking sessions and taking over an entire museum, this year’s TECHpalooza was one for the books!

Over the past couple decades, Florida has consistently been ranked as one of the top states in the country for entrepreneurial activity, but has struggled to gain national attention as a true technology hub attracting businesses, talent, and funding. Technology and STEM related fields such as fintech, healthtech, proptech, oceantech and aerospace have been a focus for the state for years, but now just starting to the attention. Over the past few years, others areas of the state such as Miami, Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville have really stepped up and helped put Florida on a national (and international) level.

TECHpalooza is here to showcase that technology.

Formerly known as ITpalooza, the event has been know as one of the main annual tech events in South Florida attracting approximately 1000 – 1500 each year. It started as a holiday party and local meetup with many IT and MSP folks in the community and grew over the years into something much more.

Being at the intersection of it’s 10th year anniversary and the first one back in person since the pandemic, TECHpalooza 2022 was due for a little shakeup!

The 2022 theme was Re-discovering Innovation so we wanted to create an environment where our tech professionals and executives could re-discover that child-like wonder of discovery STEM for the first time. Presenting sponsor, Dynatrace, was on board!

The Tech Hub team decided to move the event from the Broward County Convention Center to the Museum of Discovery & Science in downtown Ft. Lauderdale. MODS was gracious enough to allow Tech Hub to do a museum takeover and use the IMAX theatre, multiple classrooms, and the entire 2-story museum to feature the events’ keynote sessions, panel discussions, interactive activities, and 50 featured exhibitors. Imagine having your booth right next to a life size replica of an extinct megalodon or the live otter viewing area!

There were almost 20 sessions with discussions touching on topics from cybersecurity to mixed reality, but the opening keynote sure made a splash that morning.

Serial entrepreneur, inventor and Founder of Magic Leap, Rony Abovitz, was interviewed by David Coddington, Sr. VP of Business Development at The Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance.

Abovitz is not only the Founder of Magic Leap, but also the founder of Z-Kat Inc, Mako Surgical Corporation, and Sun and Thunder. He had never shared his founder journey publicly so it was a great honor for all in attendance.

The other two keynote sessions of the day were Sam Jaddi, CIO at ADT, who spoke about the importance of culture within a company in his talk titled ‘Change the Culture – Change the Game,’ and Chuck Miller, VP of Global Solutions Engineering at Dynatrace, educated the audience on the topic of ‘Modern Cloud Done Right.”

Additional sessions topics included Smart Cities, ClimateTech, Cybersecurity, Web3, Data and AI, The Future of Work, Mixed Reality Tech, Digital Transformation, Cloud Migration, Robotic Process Automation, and the Future of Flying Cars. Yup – flying cars.

Sessions were sponsored by Dynatrace (the event’s Presenting Sponsor), LAN Info Tech, Excess IT Hardware, Focus Global Talent Solutions, Brightline Trains and South Florida Business & Wealth.

In between educational speaking sessions and networking with exhibitors, VIP attendees got a chance to relax and get some coffee and food in the VIP Lounge, sponsored by the TechStrong Group with Coffee Bar sponsored by General Provision and VIP swag bags by OZ Digital Consulting.

There were food trucks and outdoor food court area sponsored by Culture Partners and a station with free snacks and water for all guests, sponsored by Origina.

Some of the featured interactive exhibitors featured this year were:

Doroni Aerospace, an eVTOL, short for electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle (AKA ‘flying cars’) gave attendees to see their first flying car prototype ever. Over $6B was invested in eVTOLs in 2021 alone, and 5 of the largest air taxi companies went public for a combined market cap of $10.7B

They are already a leader in the 2-seater segment of this industry, with a vehicle designed for personal use with potential use cases in law enforcement, search & rescue, and emergency response. The company had a cockpit protype there to educate attendees about their soon-to-launch vehicles for pre-purchase.

HADO featured an exciting interactive arena where you could challenge another team to a dodgeball game by launching virtual blue fireballs, blocking those thrown at you with energy walls, and racking up points for your team. HADO combines traditional sports with competitive gameplay as the world’s first Augmented Reality (AR) physical Esport.

The company launched in Japan where the game is highly competitive and sold out arenas bring thousands of players and fans together to watch a team battle it out for cash prizes. HADO was recently launched right here in South Florida as the U.S.-based headquarters and the company is starting with schools as an immediate target audience.

It’s fast-paced, fun, and catching on quickly.

NextEra Energy brought out some of their drone technology as well as a little friend named Spot.

Spot may not be a cuddly puppy, but this robot dog built by Boston Dynamics can be deployed amidst storms to perform essentials functions that would normally be required to be performed manually. Spot can collect substation data earlier, allowing improved coverage without risk to humans. He even had his first Super Bowl ad cameo in 2020.

Spot became fast friends with Florida Robotics’ walking and talking robot Izzy. The new pair were certainly a sight to see.

The SilverLogic, a custom software development company, had a large interactive space showcasing multiple technologies they had built for some of their clients.

They are a global organization of full-time software engineers, designers and architects focused on developing and delivering products that help businesses grow. TSL works with clients in all sorts of industries tacking issues through app creation to process automation.

Three of the featured interactive technologies that TSL featured were Lumentender, a lighting controller app, Why The Face, a facial feature detection app, ZF, an augmented reality boat parking assistance app, and a generative AI demo using test-to-image AI models to generate images with Demo Stable Diffusion and GPT3.

Lime Design, one of the leading product design companies in the U.S. and a local tech and creative hub in Hollywood, was there to feature some of the cool technologies they use when designing, prototyping and developing their one-of-a-kind products for clients.

From 3D printers, CNC machine, plasma cutters, laser cutters, blasters, graphics machines and so many more, Lime Design has all the equipment and professionals needed to bring products to life.

Attendees got the opportunity to learn more about how products are created and built, see a couple 3D printers and CNC machines at work. Just in time for the World Cup, Founder Rodrigo Lima, even printed a replica World Cup trophy that was later raffled off that night.

EventFy, a Miami-based startup company and XR virtual event metaverse cross device platform showcased its futuristic technology to business executives.

The platform allows users to be transported to another world using AR, VR, and XR tech. You can get comfortable, enjoy and relax in this new immersive experience while attending a concert, trade show, or board meeting. The possibilities are endless.

EventFy has already nabbed clients such as the NFL and Televisa Univision!

The day ended with live music from our Tech Hub band, The Cyberdelics which includes Kelly Boyle, Tech Hub board member, Jeb Reynolds, Tech Hub Ambassador, and Lenny Chesal, former board member and current Tech Hub advocate. Food and drinks were sponsored by Semantix and Gravity IT Resources.

Thank you to all the wonderful people who came together to make this year a success. The City of Ft. Lauderdale, Mayor Dean Trantalis, City Manager Greg Chavarria, NBC South Florida, our volunteers, the Dan Marino Foundation, organizing committee and so many others. Although you may not be mentioned here, we know who you are and thank you!

We have big plans over the coming years so make sure you are a part of all the action. See you at TECHpalooza 2023!

How culture and strategic decisions helped Digital Resource double in size

Read Time 4 Minutes

Digital Resource is a company where things are done just a little differently.

Being a digital marketing firm, content is certainly king, but for this company culture is the queen. The company was able to double their employee count and during the pandemic and once again be named as one of the country’s fastest growing companies.

Just months post graduation, Shay Berman, Founder & CEO, moved from Michigan to West Palm Beach, Florida. Only 22 years old and working out of his apartment, Shay took the leap and founded Digital Resource in 2014.

The company grew from just 16 employees in 2016 to 130 as they closed out the 2022 year. What you may not realize is that half of those employees began employment within the last 2 years – in the midst of the pandemic. In 2020, DR had 65 employees and has doubled in size since then.

In 2019, Nate Mendenhall, Director of Client Operations, previously described DR as “this big rocket ship. Kinda shaking and getting ready to take off.” He said that in the “next year, we’re going to be going into orbit.” I think he nailed it!

Employee count is one thing, but revenue growth is another. DR has been Inc. 5000 Ranked since 2018. In 2022 they celebrated their 5th ranking in a row! That’s pretty impressive considering the company has only been in business 8 years. Appearing on the Inc. 5000 list for over half of the company’s existence is no small feat.

  • 2022: #3917 (125% 3-Year Growth Rate)
  • 2021: #1810
  • 2020: #747
  • 2019: #334 (1,400% 3-Year Growth Rate)
  • 2018: #262 (1,855% 3-Year Growth Rate)

Highly respected companies were honored in their early days by Inc. 5000 such as Zillow, Dell, LinkedIn, Domino’s Pizza, Yelp, and even Microsoft, yet few received the honor five times. Appearing in the Inc. 5000 list five times (even if not consecutively) gives a company bragging rights of ‘Honor Roll’ status and less than 10% of companies obtain that title. You have a better chance of seeing a unicorn. . . or you can just watch the video at the end of the article. 🦄

In 2022, Digital Resource joined the Inc. 5000’s 10% – and did it consecutively to boast!!

Digital Resource was built on search engine optimization, quickly branching into social media marketing, website development, and more before becoming a full-service marketing agency. Over the years, DR has added photography, videography, integrations, lead management, and other services to the lineup.

Additionally, upon acquiring the dental marketing agency Hi5 Practice based in Nashville back in April 2022, DR brought on remote video shoots and internal practice management services.

DR went to full-time in-office to hybrid during the pandemic with a handful of remote team members across Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, and Utah.

The company made some strategic moves that helped them propel their growth over the years, but the biggest decision to date was to prioritize company culture. The work hard – play hard mentality of the team is felt immediately upon engaging with them.

Berman says, “DR continues to invest in our team’s education and happiness. All managers enrolled in Torch leadership training. We continue to provide continuing education opportunities to all team members. And we just revamped our benefits to make the lives of our team members even better!”

Plus, the company has pretty sweet office spaces, cool networking opportunities, team outings, and internal contests such as the “Luck of the Lit” wheel.

From humble beginnings with a home-office setup to soon growing out of their small office in downtown West Palm Beach, Digital Resource now has total of 16,000 sq ft of office space between 3 spaces with 12,000 sf in West Palm Beach, Florida  and a 4,000 sq ft office space in Nashville, Tennessee.

In October 2022, DR revealed their 2nd floor buildout during a networking event open to the local community. The buildout added 3k sq ft to our physical space, taking us to 12k sq ft total in West Palm Beach offering more desk space, additional conference rooms, games, and a multimedia studio w/ an infinity wall.

Through organic growth and a successful acquisition, the team continues to push forward and excelling beyond a milestone that even Berman didn’t expect to hit so soon. They have opened up Director level roles within the company introducing Director of Operations & Human Resources, Director of Client Operations, and Director of Creative Operations.

In November 2022, DR introduced the new Vice President of Sales, Jeff Gasparoni, who will be developing the Sales Team and expanding the firm’s reach into more verticals. They also named a Head of Partnerships to assist DR with building deeper connections with experts across various industries to further our clients’ growth.

First ever Ignite Florida launch to Global Entrepreneurship Week in South Florida

Read Time 4 Minutes

With the end of November comes the close of National Entrepreneurship Month. From Global Entrepreneurship Week to Small Business Saturday, startups and entrepreneurs were celebrated all month long both statewide, national and around the globe.

South Florida Tech Hub and Synapse Florida were nominated the statewide organizers for Global Entrepreneurship Week or “GEW” 2022 in Florida. The first ever Ignite Florida Startup Summit, presented by South Florida Tech Hub, helped launch Global Entrepreneurship Week in the state. From a statewide calendar, social media posts about activities each day during the week, and organizations from all across the state getting involved in activities in their cities, GEW Florida was a huge success.

Ignite Florida was hosted in collaboration with the Boca Raton Innovation Campus (BRIC), RaiseLink, and sponsored by 35 Mules, an Florida Power & Light innovation incubator. The 2-day event was held on Friday and Saturday, November 11th and 12th just prior to GEW held November 14th – 20th, 2022.

DAY 1

The event was launched on Veteran’s Day, November 11th, and featured speakers, founders, and judges who were all veterans including keynote speaker, Rhys Williams, retired Detachment Commander in U.S. Army Special Forces, Steve Edwards, former Army Specialist in the 82nd Airborne Division, U.S. Army, and John Riley III, former Desert Shield/Desert Storm Infantry Corporal in the United States Marine Corps.

The City of Boca Raton is the birthplace of the personal computer, many patents still being used today, and home to many of South Florida’s major companies and growing startups. Recently re-elected Mayor Scott Singer of the City of Boca Raton helped open the event during welcome remarks alongside the Olympic Heights Community High School’s JROTC Color Guard led by Master Sergeant Wayne Byron with The Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem, and an official proclamation presented to Nikki Cabus, South Florida Tech Hub’s CEO.

In addition to proclaiming, November 11th & 12th, 2022 as the launch to GEW Florida 2022 right here in South Florida at the Boca Raton Innovation Campus, the document and Mayor Singer recognized “the contributions of city and regional ecosystem partners including South Florida Tech Hub, Research Park of Florida Atlantic University, FAU Tech Runway and Florida SBDC at FAU, all providing programs that support job creation, education, innovation, and economic growth in our community.”

Throughout the first day, guests heard from speakers about entrepreneurship, the importance of supporting our veterans as they integrate back into the local community, start businesses and look for work, and veteran-owned startup pitches. Dr. Marlon Atherton, Founder and CEO of ATEAM Solution Services won the Friday night veteran-owned pitch contest.

“As a veteran, supporting our military veterans is very important to me. I was recently a judge in the IGNITE Veteran Pitch contest, it hammered home how important it is to support veteran-owned companies, especially veteran-owned start-ups,” said John Riley III, VP of Gov’t Services at Orion Innovations and USMC Veteran.

“For many veterans just getting out of the service, the transition to civilian life can be very challenging and even more when they are trying to start their own businesses. For them to have access to mentors and groups like South Florida Tech Hub that can align them with potential opportunities and investors will be of great benefit to many new veteran entrepreneurs in the future.”

DAY 2

The second day kicked off with coffee and breakfast for all and a keynote by the event’s presenting sponsor, Danielle Mousseau, Manager of Economic Development at 35 Mules. The day’s agenda included panels, guest speakers, an workshop on startup law, and pitches from all sorts of tech startups from healthcare to web3.

Startup exhibitors showcased their tech to all attendees. From Big Motion Studios in the metaverse to Chargefon, a power bank rental service, and Fitness At Your Door, an app bringing healthand fitness right to your living room on demand.

Panel topics included Trends in Florida’s Investment Landscape ( sponsored by Tahl Milburn), Avoiding Common IP Mistakes for Startups (sponsored by Greenberg Traurig), The People Asset (sponsored by Focus GTS), South Florida Entrepreneur Journeys (sponsored by Semantix), and the Value of Accelerators & Incubators which featured accelerator program leaders from 35 Mules, 1909, Broward Colllege’s BECx Program, and the Eglavator (sponsored by Egla Corp.)

Almost twenty startup founders who applied through the newly launched RaiseLink platform, pitched their ideas to a panel of judges. RaiseLink Founder, Boca Raton IBM tech historian and local celebrity, Pete Martinez and and RaiseLink’s CEO, Chris Houghtlaing, facilitated the picthes. Local Boca Code students built the application used for judging and it was quite impressive to see the numbers totaled in real time!

Those startups were:

Roomaters Modern Trials Everwood (a Desafío Ambiente Chile brand)
Rosi Giving Boca Code Show Agents
Fearless Mind Pet HealthCare Innovations™ 2nd Vault
EpiPaws Beach Box ARC LLC.
Synchronix Owwll EVQLV
Coping Card Inc. Mind+
Big Motion Studio Walky

In the end, Chris Ochner, Co-Founder of Modern Trials and Dr. Marlon Atherton, Founder and CEO of ATEAM Solution Services (from Friday’s pitches) both took home almost $20k in services to support their startups. Those services included everything from a South Florida Tech Hub annual membership to consulting services with IP lawyer, Howard Gitten from Lewis Brisbois to pitch review and practice with Nate Vasel from Las Olas Venture Capital and more!!

This year was a kickoff to something great, but stay tuned for GEW 2023 which kicks off November 13th, 2023!

Social Mobile  has been selected by AFWERX for a SBIR Phase II contract focused on a 5G mobile solution to investigate its potential to fill capability gaps in the Department of the Air Force (DAF). Through the contract, Social Mobile will collaborate with the DAF to design and deliver a handheld and chest-mountable device that leverages Android Enterprise and is built to military-grade specifications.

AFWERX , a program office at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), connects innovators across government, industry and academia. Through innovation and collaboration with our nation’s top subject-matter experts and harnessing the power of ingenuity of internal talent, by expanding technology, talent, and transition partnerships for rapid and affordable commercial and military capability. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is the primary scientific research and development center for the Department of the Air Force.

“Building on the success of the previous contract, we look forward to working side-by-side with the Department of the Air Force to develop a mobile solution that meets the needs of their operations today as well as in the future,” said Robert Morcos, Founder and CEO.

“Our solution will be lighter and more durable than their current device, offer more hands-free capabilities, all while taking full advantage of Android Enterprise with respect to security, features, and updates.”

Founded in 2011, Social Mobile is a Google Mobile Services (GMS) partner, leveraging the Android operating system to design, engineer, and manufacture turnkey, mobility-as-a-service deployments that enable enterprise organizations to utilize smart solutions that support an array of business-critical operations. An OEM, managed service provider, and consultancy, Social Mobile is uniquely positioned to serve as a domestic design partner to US clients, controlling all aspects of the development supply-chain, and ensuring the utmost in security and availability.

On August 9th, 2022, President Biden signed into law the CHIPS and Science Act. The Act will boost American semiconductor research, development, and production with $280 billion in subsidies and tax credits, ensuring U.S. leadership in the technology that forms the foundation of everything from automobiles to household appliances to defense systems.

However, the Act fails to address the entire downstream process of electronics design, development, and manufacturing. There are hundreds of additional components used in the production of each device (batteries, sensors, etc.) and these are largely produced overseas. Social Mobile believes that here is minimal benefit if we produce semiconductors domestically only to ship them back overseas to assemble. Social Mobile is advocating for more local production and assembly of mobile devices in the U.S.

The Air Force Research Laboratory and AFWERX have partnered to streamline the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) process by accelerating the small business experience through a faster proposal to award timelines, changing the pool of potential applicants by expanding opportunities to small business and losing bureaucratic overhead by continually implementing process improvement changes in contract execution. The DAF began offering ‘The Open Topic’ SBIR/STTR program in 2018 which expanded the range of innovations the DAF funded and now in August 2022, Social Mobile will start its journey to create and provide innovative capabilities that will strengthen the national defense of the United States of America.

This month, Social Mobile announced the hire of Jai Kishan Rao as Chief Engineering Officer and addition of Douglas Smith to the Advisory Council. Both Jai and Douglas are key to this strategy; Jai from a product design and development perspective and Douglas from a policy/government relations perspective.

Douglas Smith  is a dynamic leader who brings more than 25 years of experience managing government and private sector organizations that have excelled in advocacy, coalition building, new business development, communications, public policy, and corporate social responsibility efforts in the U.S. and around the world.

“Doug is an exciting addition to our board,” said Social Mobile CEO and Founder, Robert Morcos. “As we delve deeper into government sector initiatives, his experience in both the private and public sectors will prove invaluable.”

Previously, Smith was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as the Assistant Secretary for the Private Sector at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Prior to that, he served as Executive Vice President and General Manager for a leading international public relations and new media firm where he managed the Washington, DC office and was the primary client engagement manager for some of the firm’s most iconic Fortune 100 clients.

“I am looking forward to working closely with Robert and the entire leadership team,” said Douglas Smith. “Social Mobile is well on its way to becoming a leader in the enterprise mobility space, and my goal is to leverage my experience in finance, communications, and federal government to help take the company to the next level.”

Zoom Sign Language Interpretation View Enhances Remote Learning for the Deaf

Read Time 3 Minutes

Remote learning has it’s many benefits, one being convenience. but it’s not all too convenience if you are deaf or heard of hearing. In the past, features for the deaf and hard or hearing were almost non-existent. Although there’s still a long way to go to being fully inclusive, Zoom has been making some headway with a few features including the latest: the sign language interpretation view for Zoom Meetings and Webinars.

According to a recent Zoom blog, “Unlike other meeting layouts, the interpreter can be isolated and independent from gallery views, screen shares, spotlights, etc., but is still part of the meeting itself. This enables translators to swap duties or come and go without disrupting other participants, which can be especially helpful for all-day or multi-hour events.”

“Should the interpreter need to interact verbally with an instructor or the class, the “Allow to Talk” feature lets hosts bring an interpreter into the main session (or gallery view) and enable their microphone for discussion. What’s more, participants needing this service can resize or relocate the interpreter’s video window independently without ever leaving a meeting.”

Beth Wagmeister, CEO of Workplace Accessibility Group, or “WAG” and the Inclusion Chair at South Florida Tech Hub, warns that the misconception is that they are providing American Sign Language interpreters like a video relay interpreter. You can’t click on a button and an interpreter p[ops up. Although you will be able to allow the interpreter to be moved around the screen, positioned best for visibility, and allowed to pin even though the interpreter isn’t talking.

“It’s important for accessibility to have a person have the ability to control when and where they view the interpreter so that is an accessibility win, however, I don’t want people to be misled that that means zoom is providing American Sign Language interpreters,” says Beth.

“Previously, you could only pin one video screen while on a Zoom call. For meetings (those are usually in speaker mode, which keeps whomever is speaking highlighted), users can keep more than one speaker’s video centered, so there can be several videos pinned to the main screen. Only you as the user would see the multiple videos, so you can choose to keep an interpreter video pinned next to the main speaker, while other call participants might choose to just have the speaker centered on their screens.

A few other helpful features for the deaf and hard of hearing community are Zoom Phone’s Voicemail transcription service, Zoom’s Live Transcription, and the

Zoom Phone’s Voicemail Transcription service enables voice messages to be transcribed and read at the user’s convenience. When they can’t physically answer a call, they can read the message for pertinent information and choose when and how to respond.

Live Transcription allows users to generate an automatic, visual transcript from meeting audio that can be activated by any and all meeting participants.

Custom Gallery View enables users to click and drag videos to create a custom video order. Your custom order will be seen only by you, or the host can deploy their custom view to all participants. This order can be released and the order will revert to the default.

BCEx celebrates their inaugural 2022 Showcase and honors community partners

Read Time 4 Minutes

Broward College Entrepreneurial Experience (BCEx) helps program participants achieve their dreams. Those dreams were celebrated at the inaugural BCEx 2022 Showcase in Coconut Creek on November 17th – just in time for Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Due to the pandemic and primarily virtual programming, the BCEx Showcase was the first in person event for current and past cohorts in 2 years.  The launch of the first cohort was summer 2020.

The celebration was the culmination of another successful year at BCEx and awarding community leaders, volunteers and supporters of the program’s mission. The program has been supported by fiserv and Bank United.

BCEx is Broward College’s lean launchpad startup and small business accelerator. Different from most accelerators, participants are majority female and many are minorities coming from underrepresented communities in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Participants in BCEx receive support through six main strategies: Campus Accelerators and Events at Broward College, Student Learning at Broward College, the Innovation Hub at Broward College, LaunchBC – the BCEx business accelerator, the J. David Armstrong, Jr. Student Venture Fund, and Partnership Opportunities with Broward College.

BCEx doesn’t just support entrepreneurs, but empowers participants from students to faculty and community members through business and the cultivation of a lifelong entrepreneurial mindset. The mindset is key to the success of the program. The event featured a panel titled “Intrapreneurship in the Workplace” where four Broward College staff members (all women) shared how BCEx programs helped them take their careers to the next level. Panelists included Deborah Pinnock DebTalk LLC, Carole Hargrett, PhD, CEO of CDH Florida Groupo, Julan Samuels, PhD, CEO of IRISAJ Self-Care Hub, and Mitzi Fulwood, Broward College, Director of the iSTEM Center.

The following community supporters including our very own Tech Hub CEO, Nikki Cabus, received recognition and physical plaques for their support of the program:

  • BCEx Champion of the Year 2022: Fiserv / Shane Caldwell, BankUnited/Katrina Wright, Amazon/ Angelica Santibanez, Florida Panthers/Rob Stevenson, South Florida Tech Hub/Nikki Cabus
  • BCEx Advocate of the Year 2022: Dr. Mildred Coyne
  • BCEx Trailblazer of the Year 2022: Terry Bentley/ Mike O’Donnell
  • BCEx Academic Innovator of the Year 2022: Dr. Jamonica Rolle/Dr. Paul Moore
  • BCEx Faculty Coordinator of the year 2022: Joshua Kimber, Rudy Jean Bart, Trish Joyce, Andrea Apa

“I’m passionate about uplifting, empowering, and encouraging others; so, it was an honor to take part in BCEx’s Showcase, which was all about that! It was inspiring to be in a room with others who were empowered and equipped by this Broward College initiative to bring their business ideas to life, or/and improve their businesses if it already existed,” stated Deborah Pinnock, Broward College staff member and BCEx program alum.

“I am also grateful to BCEx for the opportunity I got to be part of a panel with passionate, powerful and authentic women, sharing on a topic that was substantive: entrepreneurship vs intrapreneurship. If you replace intrapreneur and entrepreneur with courageous, creative, problem solvers, it’s easy to understand why the right mindset is vital.

Imran Siddiqui, Associate Vice President of Broward College’s Employment Solutions division and BCEx, believes that the entrepreneurial mindset can change lives.

In his role he supports Senior Vice President, Mildred Coyne in building a revolutionary approach to higher-ed job placement with a goal of effectively transforming Broward College into a high-level job placement agency. He also oversees all entrepreneurship activity related to BCEx, the Broward College Innovation Hub and the J. David Armstrong Student Venture Fund.

BCEx has hosted notable events such as a a fireside chat with Chris Bosh, NBA legend and author of “Letters to a Young Athlete” and recently selected as the inaugural site for the Perkins V Entrepreneurship Education and Training Grant (EET). They have also received high-impact grants to help Broward College students, faculty, and staff cultivate their entrepreneurial mindset and turn their ideas into reality by launching high-quality businesses at little-to-no cost. Started in 2018, BCEx helps participants innovate, create, and prepare for the future of work through mentorship, coaching, funding, and training.

Learn more about the upcoming 12-week FREE-of-charge BCEx Lean Launchpad Accelerator coming Feb 2023. BCEx is accepting applicants for Cohort 6 this Spring and those that want to turn their start-up into reality while building your business foundation. NextEra completes successful 4-week AI Bootcamp through Mark Cuban Foundation

Read Time 2 Minutes

Just this past weekend, NextEra Energy Resources completed the 4-week AI Bootcamp in collaboration with the Mark Cuban Foundation.

There were only 30 locations across the entire United States chosen for this program and two were approved here in South Florida: one in Miami and one in Palm Beach County. Although a fairly new initiative founded in 2019 by the Mark Cuban Foundation, the program attracted over 600 high school students in 9th – 12th grades.

There were over 20 high school students in attendance for the Palm Beach County program. Florida Power and Light sponsored and hosted the program at no cost to students. The classes were held in the beautiful FPL Manatee Lagoon in West Palm Beach which is an FPL Eco-Discovery Center.

Grace Kurian (pictured above on right) , Executive Director of Information Technology-Nuclear at NextEra Energy Inc, previously stated that “FPL is proud to serve as the host company for Mark Cuban’s AI Boot Camp for students who would otherwise not have exposure to programs in STEM. Our corporate culture is focused on giving back to the communities where we live and work. We are intentional about supporting and building thriving communities for the next generation.”

The program spanned 4 Saturdays from October 22nd to November 12th, but took months of planning, 22 volunteers and over 100+ volunteer hours to make this bootcamp come to life. Volunteers ranged from entry-level developers to the VP of IT and Business Unit CIO at FPL, Michael Fowler.

Normally taught at the collegiate level, students had the opportunity to interact in hands-on workshops about chatbots, AI, Machine learning and Natural Language processing – topics many had never encountered before.

Aimed to increase AI literacy and understanding in students from underserved communities, the high schools students didn’t need any prior experience with computer science, programming, or robotics to apply and attend.

Students completed a final project and made a presentation to the entire class. This not only helped them showcase their newly found technical skills, but the ability to present, communicate and practice public speaking skills.

At the close of the bootcamp, one students gave a thank you card with a kind message to his volunteer instructor: “Thank you for helping me with this bootcamp. I appreciate all your time and efforts into organizing this camp. I really learned a lot these past 4 weeks. Thank you!”

Supported by Verizon, YWCA’s Inaugural STEM Day for Girls supports diversity

Read Time 3 Minutes

In honor of National STEM Day this month, the YWCA of Palm Beach County held their inaugural STEM Day for Girls at the Cox Science Center and Aquarium in West Palm Beach.

National STEM Day began in 2015 and is held each year on November 8th to encourage students to pursue careers in the fast-growing fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

More than 80 young ladies attended the inaugural event which was sponsored by Verizon in support of an an effort to introduce students to careers they might not know about. This is especially important for students within the underserved communities where programs and access to STEM activities may be limited or even not available at all. Students attended from Pace Center for Girls, Suncoast Community High School, and Lake Worth Middle School.

The YWCA of Palm Beach County is a nonprofit organization committed to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all and the Pace Center for Girls provides year-round safe and supportive academic and counseling programs to help girls understand their past and prepare for their future. Both organizations support young

The day began with a fireside chat with Merdochey LaFrance, Director of Local Engagement, State & Local Government Affairs, at Verizon and Nicole Cummings, Program Manager (and real life Rocket Scientist!) at Aerojet Rocketdyne. Nicole discussed the importance of representation of Black Women in STEM Careers, why mentorship in her personal and professional lives are crucial to her success, and why it’s important to rise above someone’s limited opinion of you when you have a goal and destination in mind.

The ladies then transitioned to a scavenger hunt at the Cox Science Center & Aquarium which allowed them to become acclimated with the museum campus and discover novel STEM concepts. The day ended with each young lady being able to play chemist for the day and creating their own cosmetics.

“I’m so appreciative for ’s partnership at The Cox Science Center and Aquarium as well as the PHENOMENAL leadership of Shea S. SpencerShaundelyn D. EmersonJanelle Floyd, and Sasha Baranov, M.S. at YWCA Palm Beach County who executed the day with excellence!” said LaFrance.

Founded and incorporated in 1959 by the Junior League of the Palm Beaches and open to the public in 1961, the South Florida Science Museum, or now known as The Cox Science Center and Aquarium, has been supporting discovery and innovation for over 60 years!

On November 15, 2021 the museum announced exciting expansion plans along with the name change to Cox Science Center and Aquarium, thanks to a record donation from Howard and Wendy Cox. Their $20 million lead gift serves as the keystone for a $45 million capital expansion campaign to take the new Cox Science Center and Aquarium into the future with expanded exhibit and programming spaces, including one of Florida’s largest aquariums. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2023 and a grand opening to the public is targeted for 2025.

Verizon is a huge supporter of tech, innovation, inclusion and inspiration in communities all over the country including here in South Florida through multiple Verizon-backed programs such as Verizon Innovative Learning.

Business: A social enterprise that liquidates legacy computer equipment, securely destroys data, and recycles electronic waste.

Founded: 2016

HQ: West Palm Beach

Employees: 12

Website: ExcessITHardware.com

Worldwide, we generate around 40 million tons of electronic waste (e-waste) every single year. That’s akin to throwing away 800 laptops every second. E-waste makes up 70% of our overall toxic waste.

Chris Schoeller has dealt with this e-waste firsthand. At the beginning of his career, Schoeller worked at a few startups that eventually folded. But before the dust settled, Schoeller noted one major problem these companies were left to deal with: their excess technology.

“Businesses get rid of their excess IT hardware basically every three to four years,” Schoeller told South Florida Tech Hub. “They refresh a quarter or a third of their IT assets at a time.”

That raised a question: What do they actually do with this old hardware?

Schoeller is on it. He is the founder and managing director of West Palm Beach-based Excess IT Hardware, a social enterprise that liquidates legacy computer equipment, securely destroys data, and recycles electronic waste.

Clients contact Schoeller’s team when they need to have their tech picked up. Oftentimes, Excess IT Hardware even leaves recycling bins right at their clients’ facilities. The company then picks up this tech and brings it back to their facility while keeping tabs on it through an online tracking system. For some clients, Excess IT Hardware undertakes the entire process right on site.

Excess IT Hardware then determines what they are able to sell for their clients, and what they will recycle. In many cases, Schoeller told us, their clients are able to break even or even profit by selling their old tech through Excess IT Hardware.

Schoeller explained that data security is top of mind for their clients. “We ensure that anything that goes out the door is erased, cleared, or destroyed,” he said. The company has a wide range of certifications at the local, state, and federal level to ensure that they keep up with industry-wide best practices.

Giving back to our community is a core mission of Excess IT Hardware. The company prides itself in facilitating the donation of technology to nonprofits around South Florida. In particular, Schoeller is happy to provide laptops to people who otherwise might not be able to purchase one. “It feels great to help lessen the digital divide,” Schoeller said.

Maria Benitez, Excess IT Hardware’s marketing and sales administrator, underscored the importance of this mission. “We would much rather give this excess tech to people in the community than have it in a landfill,” she said. “I’m glad that we are able to continue to give back to the community.”

This year, Excess IT Hardware has experienced 40% growth in terms of volume and revenue. Schoeller hopes to accelerate this trend even further in 2023 by creating even more value-add services for its clients. He also hopes to be able to further spread the word about the auxiliary services Excess IT Hardware already offers, such as reselling spare parts.

Excess IT Hardware donates needed laptops to deserving scholars

Read Time 3 Minutes

Excess I.T. Hardware donated 30 laptops to the George Snow Scholarship Fund.

Excess IT Hardware is a social enterprise computer equipment liquidation, secure data destruction and e-waste recycling company. From one asset to multi-location global projects, Excess IT Hardware can provide secure, efficient and ethical, IT asset management and computer equipment liquidation services.

The George Snow Scholarship Fund is a a non-profit organization in Palm Beach County dedicated to helping deserving high school students within the community achieve their career goals through their pursuit of higher education. The organization stands in support of anyone who has ever endured racial inequality and firmly believe that no one should be treated unfairly based on the color of their skin.

Since its inception in 1981, the Fund has awarded over 18 million dollars in educational grants. In the year 2021 alone, the Scholarship Fund awarded over $2,100,000 in scholarships and scholars support services to 234 Snow Scholars. This level of support places the Fund as one of Palm Beach County’s largest sources of educational grants.

From College Care Packages for students with little or no support at home to Essential Life Seminars that help students feel more safe and comfortable stepping into their new and unknown surroundings, the nonprofit also assists students obtain needed resources through the Computer and College Supply program. Many students who come from underserved communities don’t have the necessary tools such as a laptop that many of us take for granted. The donation from Excess IT Hardware ensure each laptop will go to a scholar in need.

“We don’t want to stop at the scholarship to the college/university, but support them through their journey with care packages, necessary funds and computers.  We offer our new class of scholars the option of choosing a new laptop or a college supply stipend check, but those who choose the stipend check are still left without a computer,” said Leslie Cornwell, Vice President of Scholar Services at George Snow Scholarship Fund.

“Excess IT was a lifesaver for those who did not choose a computer because they didn’t realize how much they would need one. As we celebrate 40 years in business, we appreciate our partners and donors who help us support our scholars each year.”

Excess IT Hardware believes that old electronics have value. Some can be cleaned, repaired or sold, and others are torn down into basic parts. As a Social Enterprise Company, EIH chooses to make a difference through their business model and process. What EIH does is monetize these electronics and then put that money, or hardware, back to work in the community.

“Our goal is to not just provide a needed service, but to also make a impact in the community” said Chris Schoeller, Founder and CEO at Excess IT Hardware.

“By working with and donating hardware to The George Snow Foundation and other groups with whom we partner, we can help our corporate recycling client’s extend not just the value, but the useful life, of their end of life IT Assets”.

Although students receive scholarships and support to attend universities and colleges across the country, the Fund loves to see our students stay here in South Florida and impact their local communities. Many of these students attend educational institutions such as Palm Beach State College.

Van Williams, the Provost of Palm Beach State College, recently hosted a Meet & Greet Reception for the #SnowScholars that are attending PBSC.

Van Williams and his administrative team welcomed the new scholars speaking to them about needed resources and where they can find assistance during their educational journeys. With new laptops, care packages and a confidence boost, the students were ready for their first semester.
