Building a Palm Beach Tech Intern Program

Recap on the 2018 Palm Beach Tech Association Intern Forum

On September 28, 2018, the education committee of Palm Beach Tech Association held the Internship Forum, alongside four South Florida Universities; Lynn University, Florida Atlantic University, Palm Beach Atlantic University, and Palm Beach State College.

Led by Michael Fowler (FP&L), Cathy Miron (eSilo) & Barbara Cambia (Lynn University), the effort included over 50 executives and educators from throughout South Florida.

Palm Beach Tech Intern Forum

The overarching theme of this forum was to bring together executives, educators, interns, and everyone in between to focus on three major goals; building academic partnerships, identifying the intern program best practices, and developing a Palm Beach Tech Intern Program.

Click Here to Read our Followup Report

Through two breakout sessions, participants were able to come to several conclusions on the definition of success regarding intern programs. Most notable of all, participants found that interns were most successful when they learned both hard and soft skills prior to their careers.

A major piece of discussion was the proposal to begin a Palm Beach Tech Intern program serving at least 50 students and 15 companies.

Palm Beach Tech Intern Program

Palm Beach Tech is researching the launch of an intern program in Summer 2019.

We plan to work with higher education institutions throughout Florida to connect students with companies seeking interns who meet the following criteria:

  • Are a Palm Beach Tech Member
  • Provide Paid Internship(s)
  • Have Physical Presence in South Florida

The program areas we’re researching include mentorship programs, cross-training, and team-building, but will most certainly include:

  • Week-long Intern Bootcamp | Five full days of instruction on coding languages, project management, entrepreneurship, and soft skills.
  • Development Events | After work events with accomplished executives and professionals allowing rare opportunities to learn from those who’ve been there.

This program would incapsulate access to local talent and potential hires to prospective employers. We’re also working with tech council partners throughout the country to further develop this concept.

More information will be released in January 2019, and we hope that our effort to build a community of impassioned technologists will continue to build an educational pipeline for tech jobs throughout South Florida.

Hacking for our Community

This was wasn’t your typical hackathon… Instead of having teams just compete for money or to seed a business, the goal was to give back to the community. All teams were given the direction to “Build something that benefits the community.”

All hackers were invited to bond over the local community and their shared love of technology. Some teams leaned on their own experiences, while others tackled problems they’ve long seen.

Participants coded, hacked, built, and tested as the hours ticked by, but in the end there were 16 teams pitching our judging panel.

The Results

Comprised mostly of employees of Office Depot, came in first place, they developed an AI chatbot for governments and nonprofits that integrated with multiple platforms, such as Web, Facebook, & Slack.

2nd Place* | Team Woco: Julissa Rosado, Sara Hashem, Sylke Lopez, Morgan Nimmons, Hanadi Alotaibi, Alina Gasperino, Elena Snyder, Michelle Bakels

Palm Beach Tech supports two Economic Studies

Read Time 2 Minutes

This summer, Palm Beach Tech supported the Palm Beach County Workforce Skills Study and the City of West Palm Beach Economic Study.

The West Palm Beach study was facilitated by City’s Economic Development Department. Palm Beach Tech was noted as the city’s Innovation Cultivator’, bringing together businesses, educational institutions, incubators, accelerators, co-working spaces, and other support systems for innovation.

The Study also noted “West Palm Beach is entrepreneurial and innovative, with a high share of self-employed individuals and an above-average number of patent holding inventors living in the city.”

Some other key points from the Economic Development Study include:

  • Since 2012, employment in West Palm Beach has risen by more than 20% and 9% in the U.S..
  • From 2012-2017, Software/IT industry was one of the fastest growing clusters (24%).
  • Cybersecurity market will increase from $75 billion to $170 billion by 2020.
  • There’s an opportunity for the city to connect  businesses with additional resources, such as EB-5 Programs and potential investors.
  • Palm Beach County [is] home to many investment management firms and wealthy individuals, but the community lacks a strong investor community focused on local opportunities and startups.

The Palm Beach County Workforce Skills study was facilitated by the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County. Palm Beach Tech staff, members, and board members met with the study team several time to give high level insight and feedback.

While noting the Palm Beaches maintain over 1,400 technology companies, they trace the industry’s inception to the early days of computers. “The IT sector has been a critical component of the Palm Beach County economy since the IBM PC was created in Boca Raton in the early 1980s at an IBM facility that originally opened the 1960s.”

Some keep points from the Workforce Skills Study include:

  • Employers in the Information Technology sector are more focused on talent with skills and aptitude for the occupation than on specific degree requirements.
  • Business intelligence, data mining and informatics are particular skills areas in which it is difficult to find talent.
  • Information technology instruction should be embedded across the curriculum as demand for these skills continues to grow in virtually all sectors and occupations.
  • Job postings for IT & Telecommunications positions totaled almost 6,800 from May 2017 to May 2018, with a median posting duration of 39 days
  • IT skills are required in all business sectors. This level of demand across the economy often results in an inadequate pipeline of talent.

West Palm Beach, Fla.Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches & Treasure Coast (JAPBTC) has formally partnered with HotelPlanner.com and the Palm Beach Tech Association to expand their JA Job Shadow program.

JA Job Shadow encourages entrepreneurs and business owners to commit their time, share stories of their entrepreneurial journey, and open the eyes of high school students to future opportunities. This gives local students opportunities to experience office life, participate in internships, as well as advice and next steps for students to make the most beneficial choices for their future.

In 2018, the JA Job Shadow program was hosted by West Palm Beach based HotelPlanner.com and the Palm Beach Tech Association, and resulted in students receiving employment and internships.

Palm Beach Tech hosted the program at their downtown co-working space, educating high school students on the principles of technology entrepreneurship, and helping them develop startup ideas of their own. Palm Beach Tech has since hired two of those students as summer interns.

HotelPlanner.com decided not only to offer the program again to the students, but to also sponsor it. The HotelPlanner.com staff will spend time mentoring the students, educating in soft skills, and introducing them to new possibilities and exciting opportunities in the field. They also plan to offer internships to the students who are interested and qualify.

“Junior Achievement is asking all local businesses, big or small, to open their doors and allow local students to see the endless possible career paths our County has to offer,” said Bob Cawood, JAPBTC’s Business Development Manager. “Our vision is to help build a better Palm Beach County by keeping our students local after they graduate.”

Palm Beach Tech building Mentor Network

Meet UNION, the software behind our new mentor network!

First developed by the 1776 Accelerator in Washington DC, it’s now used by organizations as local as the regional Tampa Bay Wave, and as large as the global 500 Startups.

Led by our intern Brandon Cohen, Palm Beach Tech will be formally adopting this program and scaling it in the Fall to benefit our entire community.

How it works?

Founders face some pretty difficult questions. How do they get access to resources they need to start, grow, or scale their companies? And, who should they turn to for advice & expertise?

Our goal? Become the primary outlet for founders that fosters both mentorship & company growth. By utilizing UNION, we can help finally bridge the gap between connecting relevant mentors & mentees here in our community.

Mentors have the ability to create recurring office hours, create personalized curriculums, and connect with local founders either in person or virtually.

What are the benefits?

UNION allows us to provide a accessible pool of mentors for local founders, .

Mentees will have the opportunity to learn one-on-one (in person or virtually) from successful entrepreneurs who’ve built companies in the Palm Beaches, getting advice on business plans, team building, marketing, raising capital, and more.

We will utilize metric tracking (KPIs) to identify every minute of mentorship. This will allow us to identify company growth and measure consistent progress.

Why Mentor?

Mentors have the opportunity to provide invaluable advice to others, many facing the same hurdles faced by others at one point or another. All in all, helping others is a great way to support your community.

We’re on the lookout for the best and brightest entrepreneurs, technologists, and business executives in the Palm Beaches.

If you’re interested in mentoring, Click Here to Apply!

Introducing the New Palm Beach Tech Speakers Bureau

We’re excited to announce the launching of our new Speakers Bureau program for the Palm Beach community!

We at Palm Beach Tech decided to launch the Speakers Bureau to better educate our community about the booming tech industry, and it’s exponential growth.

This program links different professionals from a variety of industries to speak to classrooms, businesses, clubs, and community organizations. Our goal is to provide speakers to teach, share, and spark a conversation.

About the Speakers Bureau

Speakers Bureau is our new initiative in conjunction with our partners Junior Achievement and the School District of Palm Beach County.

Through the Speakers Bureau, Palm Beach Tech finds and pairs speakers in tech and business with organizations, classrooms, and groups.

We’re especially proud to have have entrepreneurs, coders and tech wizards available able to speak about how to utilize and implement tech in business.

For classrooms,  they inspire and excite students, sharing with them the infinite number of jobs you can have — and create.

Why a Speakers Bureau?

The Speakers Bureau gathers our community around a single uniting factor: learning.

You can submit a request for a speaker online. You can request speakers for your group from different industries or with knowledge in different topics. From there, our staff goes through to identify the best speaker for your event.

You can be a teacher, civic leader, or anyone with an audience; we welcome all to send in requests. Each speaker aims to provide quality knowledge, valuable insights, and even a bit of fun!

Moving our community forward

The Speakers Bureau will allow Palm Beach Tech to bring our industry’s talent to our community. Our organization is a part of Palm Beach County, and we want to help further connect the community around us.

Whether speaking in classrooms to empower the youth or with community organizations who want to grow their understanding, we welcome all to learn about technology.

Are you interested in having a speaker talk to your group? Click here to learn more and request your speaker.
