Palm Beach Tech releases Education Forum Report

Read Time 2 Minutes

Palm Beach Tech Members & Partners,

On February 13th of this year, the Palm Beach Tech Association’s Education Committee held our first Palm Beach Tech Education Forum with the support of the Business Higher Education Forum (BHEF).

Click Here to Download our Report

The gathering was to focus on attaining three (3) predetermined goals as defined by the organizing team of Michael Fowler (NextEra Energy), Debbie Hughes (BHEF), Barbara Cambia (Lynn University), and myself:

  • Build Academic Partnerships
  • Strengthen Talent Initiatives
  • Identify Actionable Insights & Trends

With the support of our members, partners, and staff, we identified seven (7) gaps and six (6) opportunities listed in following report for our industry to address in the coming year. The Education Committee will take on these tasks through a yearlong 2018-2019 tactical plan set in June 2018, and as approved by the Board of Directors.

Additionally, it’s imperative to note we would not have been successful in this effort without the support of several South Florida Higher Educational Institutions. Of the following, we also had eight (8) Deans or High Level Administrators attend

  • Florida Atlantic University
  • Lynn University
  • Palm Beach State College
  • Keiser University
  • Nova Southeastern University
  • Miami Dade College
  • Palm Beach County School District

It’s our hope that this continued effort will lead to further building our Educational Pipeline for technology jobs in the Palm Beaches and South Florida.

Sincerely,

Joseph R. Russo

Hacking for a Cause: The 2018 Palm Beach Tech Hackathon

Read Time 3 Minutes

Palm Beach Tech Hackathon, Palm Beach County’s first ever 24-hour hackathon, was held on February 23 to 25 and brought in over 75 attendees. Hosted by Palm Beach Tech and the South Florida Science Center, the attendees ranged in age from middle school students to seasoned professionals with 20 years in the industry.

All hackers were invited to bond over the local community and their shared love of technology.

Hacking with a Purpose

This was wasn’t your typical hackathon… Instead of having teams just compete for money or to seed a business, the goal was to give back to the community by helping out a local nonprofit that is hungry for technology. By involving participants in building and providing high-quality tech in every facet of the community, including non-profits, we’ll grow our overall innovation at an exponential rate.

This year, Palm Beach Tech partnered with the Palm Beach County STEM & the Palm Beach County School DistrictThey brought three definitive problems for the hackers to solve:

  1. Matchmaking Classrooms with STEM Professionals: Creation of a platform where classrooms can post their needs and companies can submit their abilities.
  2. Promoting Events & Organization Opportunities: Creation of a software tool that integrates events from partner organizations, to aggregate then disseminate that information to parents, teachers, and the community.
  3. Your Own Idea and Project: Any team who can identify a credible problem and tangible solution to present their own idea. The project must be presented to the School District Staff on Friday evening for vetting and approval.

The Event

Participants coded, hacked, built, and tested as the hours ticked by. The animated atmosphere encouraged most to work through the night. There was palpable energy through the Science Center as the end of the 24 hours got closer.

When the hackathon ended, and each hacker sat back with a deep breath. They’d spent the past 24 hours creating and collaborating towards a shared goal. Despite their exhaustion, they felt immense pride, energy, and accomplishment.

Team Red Stapler, comprised mostly of employees of Florida Power & Light, came in first place. They worked 24 hours straight to build a website that automatically aggregated STEM and community events, and even included an integrated FAQ chatbot.

The Results

1st Place* | Team Red Stapler: Carolyn Gadigan, Rita Borraccio, Kirk Suscella, Dmitri Soroka, Laura Fagley, Sathiya, Venugopalakrishnan

*This team donated their winnings to Palm Beach Tech & Tech Garage

2nd Place | Team Undecided: Brett Wright, Colton Zecca, David ‘Mack’ Seager

3rd Place | Team Nebular: Ryan Wang, Gabriel Ferguson, Greg Perlman, Dani Healy, Sarah Nohe

4th Place | Team Tech Garage: Arman Alexis, Oalis Husband, Julia Cardoso, Christopher Cox, Devin Willis, and Dexter Dixon

Getting Involved

Palm Beach Tech is already planning next year’s hackathon. We’re looking to turn this 24-hour event into an annual competition that helps nonprofits and community organizations for years to come.

Are you looking to get in on the action?

Attend one of our upcoming Palm Beach Tech events or become a member today! We look forward to having you on board for our other exciting events.

Russo: Palm Beach Tech will adopt Code of Ethics

Read Time 2 Minutes

The Palm Beach Association represents the very best of talent and innovation in the Palm Beaches.

Each day, I lead a full time staff of two wonderful ladies (Stephanie & Tyler), in addition to a team of talented interns each semester. These people reinforce my faith in the future, but remind me that we always need to be doing more.

In 2016, one of our community members came to me and said, “I’m going to do a meetup of women before the Palm Beach Tech Meetup so no one feels like they’re going alone.”

That took me a little aback, for as much as we promote inclusiveness and positivity throughout our organization, we must constantly engage and work to include others in all of our activities.

Recently, an organization similar to Palm Beach Tech was closed down in another state after its leader resigned in response to their misconduct. This has more than ever brought to light our responsibility as leaders to promote the highest standard of character.

I’ve asked our staff and Board of Directors to immediately draft and adopt a Palm Beach Tech Code of Ethics. We must acknowledge that we have a greater duty to assure everyone feels welcome, safe, and at home within our community.

This document will be applied to our organization, our members, and to every person we work with. It will serve as a zero-tolerance policy, outlining our intent to work only with those who value others, no matter their gender, sexual orientation, race, or beliefs.

Additionally, we will call on other technology, innovation, and startup organizations throughout Florida and our country to follow suit. As the gender and ethnic gaps in our industry’s workforce are behind national norms, the actions of some beneath our moral capacity. It’s our duty to lead this change.

We are the embodiment of the future we envision – lets make it one we’re proud of.

New Year, New Perks: Introducing Our New Councils

Read Time 2 Minutes

It’s a new year, and as we head into 2018, Palm Beach Tech’s Team is ready to bring forward new opportunities for our members; membership councils.

Starting this month, we’re introducing a new format for our membership councils: namely the Startup Council and the CIO Council.

Introducing Member Councils

“These councils will provide new value for members in the form of exclusive opportunities to meet like-minded individuals, network with other member businesses, and discuss common interest,” said CIO Council Frank Barbato, who’s also the President of Third Wave Technologies

The new format for councils is a departure from the prior council format. Palm Beach Tech already has a Startup Council, for example, but in its previous format it functioned as a task force discussing potential opportunities & initiatives for Palm Beach Tech.

The new purpose of the Startup and CIO Councils is to adopt a roundtable format, where members will be able to meet, discuss issues, brainstorm ideas, and influence Palm Beach Tech’s strategies for the future.  All this in an environment that is more intimate than monthly meetups.

Bringing new value to Palm Beach Tech Members

“We want to offer a new, more personal setting for our members to interact with each other. This is the driving force between the new councils — to better engage members, together,” said Executive Director Joe Russo

The members of each council will be able to suggest speakers they would like to see at each meeting. These speakers will include industry and company leaders, who can provide insight for both individual members and their companies. Each meeting will have a speaker, but the council meetings will be interactive discussions and not a speaker series, as the monthly meetups are.

Getting involved and next steps

The first council meetings will take place in January, and are recurring monthly.

  • CIO Council: First meeting will be January 9 and feature Alex Rudloff, former chief digital strategist of TEDx & Vice President at AOLIf interested, contact Chair Frank Barbato
  • Startup Council: First meeting will be January 11 and feature Alex Furmansky, founder of Budsies and a participant on Shark Tank. If Interested, contact Chair Daniel Lofaso

Council Membership will be by invitation and referral, and is only available to Palm Beach Tech members. If you’re interested in becoming a member or have any questions, be sure to visit PalmBeachTech.org

SkyBike & Palm Beach Tech Announce Community Partnership

Read Time 3 Minutes

It’s time to get out of the office and experience the vibrant downtown, the sunny breeze, and the downtown community of West Palm Beach!

As of December, every member of the Palm Beach Tech Space has access to a complimentary SkyBike membership! This will allow all members of the Space free 45-minute rides whenever and wherever they desire around Downtown West Palm Beach.

The team up

SkyBike is a West Palm Beach staple — it’s a fun, convenient, and healthy way for residents and visitors to enjoy all that West Palm Beach has to offer.

“SkyBike encourages consumers to use the bike share system for commuting, running errands, or enjoying a lunch break,” said Juan Orellana, general manager of SkyBike WPB. With Flagler Shore and downtown, the possibilities of biking around town are endless.

So, Palm Beach Tech has teamed up with SkyBike to offer this new and exciting possibility for their members.

The partnership will facilitate movement around downtown for PBT Space members. Joe Russo, executive director at Palm Beach Tech, stated, “We want our members to enjoy downtown as far as they feel they can bike.”

For SkyBike, the partnership makes sense because the SkyBike system is completely technological. It’s app-driven, with bike rentals, use, returns, and issue reporting happening completely from your phone. Beyond that, SkyBike’s integration of technology and community directly reflects the mission of Palm Beach Tech. The culture, mission, and goals of these two companies blend seamlessly to deliver healthy enjoyment to PBT members!

Working together for downtown

The purpose of Palm Beach Tech is not only to innovate in the tech industry, but also to support and strengthen the individuals who are working in the tech world. They are a community-centric association looking to create a culture of engagement, satisfaction, happiness, and wellness for all participants. Thus, Palm Beach Tech is always looking for new perks to provide their members.

Membership will provide:

  • A healthy means of exercise and commuting
  • A new form of travel outside the car
  • Increased downtown mobility
  • Boosted sense of community within the city
  • Reduced carbon emissions into the environment
